Christopher Guest’s next film, Mascots, to debut on Netflix in 2016

Christopher Guest films are amongst the funniest of the last twenty years. Inspired by his work with Rob Reiner on THIS IS SPINAL TAP, Guest tapped into the mockumentary format and hit gold with WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, BEST IN SHOW, and A MIGHTY WIND. He tried something a little different with FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. While it did not work quite as well, his troupe of regular actors still made me laugh. Now, after working on the short-lived HBO series Family Tree, Guest is back to feature films with MASCOTS.

Neflix made the official announcement that Christopher Guest's next film would debut on the streaming service next year. This marks the latest in a line of Hollywood talent to bank deals with Netflix including Adam Sandler, Cary Fukunaga, and Brad Pitt. Here's the synopsis for MASCOTS.

Welcome to all the drama, intrigue, and occasional excitement of the 8th World Mascot Association Championships, where a group of "unusual" men and women, with big heads and furry suits, compete to win the prestigious Gold Fluffy Award and be crowned best mascot in the world.

That sounds a lot like BEST IN SHOW which many consider to be Guest's best directorial effort. I am hoping Guest's regular players including Eugene Levy, Harry Shearer, Catherine O'Hara, Fred Willard, Ed Begley Jr., Michael McKean, Parker Posey, and more are coming back for this film. Maybe Guest's Family Tree star Chris O'Dowd will drop in as well. I just hope that being on Netflix will allow Guest a bit more freedom than he would have on a studio feature.

MASCOTS will debut on Netflix in 2016.
