Clifton Collins Jr. and Cory Hardrict

Hey look, more casting news for TRANSCENDENCE!

The sci-fi film from first time director (and long time cinematographer for Christopher Nolan) Wally Pfister has been on a hiring tear lately, nabbing Morgan Freeman last week and Cillian Murphy just three days ago. Now Variety is reporting that Clifton Collins Jr. (or as I like to call him, the American Robert Carlyle) has joined the film that also stars Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany, Kate Mara and Rebecca Hall. It was not stated who Collins would be playing in the film.

Meanwhile over at Black Film, they’ve learned that Cory Hardrict will also be in the film. You may not know the name but you’ve probably seen him in such films as BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, GRAN TORINO, THE DAY, and WARM BODIES. Cory Hardrict will be playing Joel Edmonton…and that’s all we know. We don’t know his occupation or how he’s involved with the plot for the film but since the lead roles have been cast Hardrict is probably playing a scientist (because you can never have too many scientists) or part of the anti-technology terrorist group mentioned in the unofficial synopsis:

Three scientists — Max (Bettany) and the husband and wife team, Will (Depp) and Evelyn (Hall) — have been developing a programming code for the world’s first fully self-aware computer.  When a group of anti-technology terrorists assassinate Will, Evelyn uploads his brain into a prototype supercomputer. Although she at first finds the experiment seems to have gone wrong, before too long Evelyn finds Will responding in computer form. She goes on to connect Will to the Internet so he can help make further scientific breakthroughs. Will asks Evelyn to connect a microphone and a camera up to the computer so he can see and speak to her as well. Will creates a backup of himself to every computer in the world, and furthers his work through accessing online indexes. When the anti-technology organization finds out, they try to steal the supercomputer and destroy it, but Will no longer needs the computer to survive.

With this being Wally Pfister‘s directing debut, having a Christopher Nolan connection, an interesting plot and an awesome cast, there’s going to be a lot of hype for TRANSCENDENCE but I think a trailer is what is really going to sell this film for a lot of people.

It’s probably going to be awhile before we see a trailer though: filming for TRANSCENDENCE is going to start sometime next month and the film isn’t scheduled to be released until on April 25th, 2014.
