Colin Firth found his voice and inspired the people to fight back against the Nazis in THE KINGS SPEECH, and how he’s getting ready to fight them head-on in the new movie OPERATION MINCEMEAT. The Oscar winner was just cast in the World War II counterespionage drama set to be directed by SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE director John Madden.

Written by Emmy-nominated writer Michelle Ashford (MASTERS OF SEX, JOHN ADAMS), the movie is based on the book of the same name by Ben Macintyre which recounts the true story set during 1943, right when the Allies were about to launch their assault on Nazi-controlled Europe. Tasked with protecting the Allied forces from a slaughter, two intelligence officers, Ewen Montagu (Firth) and Charles Cholmondeley, concoct a disinformation plan set around the corpse of a dead man.

Pre-production is set to begin later this year.

Madden said in a statement (via Variety), “In the context of World War II narratives, the story of Operation Mincemeat is unique – a bizarre and seductive cinematic blend of high-level espionage and ingenious fiction, where the stakes could hardly be higher.”

“Michelle Ashford’s script fuses multiple strands and moods: tense, romantic, thrilling, unexpectedly funny, and endlessly surprising,” he continued. “It tells a richly human story of the soldiers we seldom see, who fight a different kind of war in shadows and deception, haunted by the knowledge that certainty and guarantee of success are nowhere to be found.”
