David O. Russell talks about writing a sequel to The Fighter

Really want more Dicky and Mickey?

THE FIGHTER star Mark Wahlberg has mentioned interest in doing a sequel to his acclaimed boxing drama, recently stating he doesn’t want it to get carried away like a ROCKY franchise, but do “one more because the big thing that Micky Ward was famous for was his three epic battles with Arturo Gatti. So we’re talking about possibly taking one more run at it. Everybody had such an amazing experience making the movie that I can’t imagine they wouldn’t want to go back.”

And director David O. Russell obviously wants to go back. As he tells MTV: “I would do it whenever anyone says they’re ready. I’m ready to write it.

So Russell would tackle the script, and what does he envision for the story? Pretty much what Wahlberg wants: “I think Micky’s story has a lot of heart whichever way you cut it. You’d go towards the Gatti fights and you could go into the history of the family more. I really like the sisters.”

Of course, considering the rate at which Russell is collecting projects (at least a half-dozen now and counting), it might be a long time before Mickey climbs back in the ring…
