Director Duncan Jones to direct period action film based on 007 creator Ian Fleming

MOON and SOURCE CODE director Duncan Jones has announced his next project, which he’s currently casting for, in the form of a biographical period action film based on the life of Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond 007.  While we all anticipated Jones taking on a big action/sci-fi franchise (a la TERMINATOR), it seems that he has his eye trained on something much different.  And, I’m all the happier for it.

From the press release:

Before Ian Fleming became the globally renowned best-selling author, his own life was no less exciting than that of the hero he created. Fleming travelled the world and masterminded real life top-secret operations, inspiring him to create James Bond. Duncan Jones’ take will explore and tie together those events in the author’s life that gave birth to Britain’s greatest superspy.

Jones has emerged as a shoe-in name for many of Hollywood’s upcoming big budget projects, but hasn’t taken the bait on any of them, instead opting for something that seems to inspire him.  Gee, imagine that?  The story will be based on the biography “Ian Fleming, The Man Behind James Bond” by Andrew Lycett, although I’m sure we can expect some embellishments.

“Fleming lived through one of the most perilous periods in world history, in a position that allowed him a unique vantage point of all the players, all the stakes.  He witnesses true heroism first-hand.  And he saw the evil men could do.  Then, when the war ended, he went off to write fiction. The essential question for me is; where did Ian Fleming end and Bond begin?” said Jones about the project.

It’s kind of amazing how the character of Jame Bond has stayed with audiences for so long and continues to deliver top notch entertainment.  With SKYFALL, the latest Bond opus, hitting theaters this November (and judging from the trailer today, looking pretty badass) it appears that Ian Fleming’s legacy will continue to deliver the goods.

This should be an interesting one.  More as this project develops.

Oh, and in case you wanted to know where James Bond got his name:
