Director James Mangold shares some portraits of Hugh Jackman and his co-stars from The Wolverine

With production wrapped on THE WOLVERINE and an eagerly anticipated trailer set to debut this month, director James Mangold has continued to share some tidbits via Twitter, including some black and white portraits of Hugh Jackman, Tao Okamoto (Mariko Yashida), and Rila Fukushima (Yukio), which were taken on the last day of filming.  Mangold has been sharing his inspiration for THE WOLVERINE as well, listing a number of films that have helped influence his vision, among them being CHUNG KING EXPRESS, THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, THE SAMURAI TRILOGY, FLOATING WEEDS, BLACK NARCISSUS, HAPPY TOGETHER, 13 ASSASSINS, THE FRENCH CONNECTION, and CHINATOWN.

All of those films fit well within the original comics written by Chris Claremont and drawn by Frank Miller, which focuses on Logan as the outsider or “gaijin” who is trapped in a circle of love, revenge, and honor.  It’s a great few issues and I don’t think it would spoil the film to check ’em out before the movie drops.

Say, “Snikt!”:

In addition to THE WOLVERINE pics, Mangold also tweeted a few pics from the set of 3:10 TO YUMA, which I thought I’d share here as well.  The two shots of Russell Crowe and Christian Bale were taken by the director and are really cool, as I think it’s the first time these have ever been seen by the public.  If anything, it was 3:10 TO YUMA that convinced me Mangold could deliver a Wolverine film that would be as deep as something that original director Darren Arronofsky would’ve brought.

THE WOLVERINE pops its claws on July 26, 2013.
