Update: In addition to today's news about tickets for Disney's THE NEW MUTANTS going on sale next week, Marvel and the House of Mouse have dropped a new poster for the long-awaited superhero drama's IMAX release. The print features all five of the film's primary characters – Illyana Rasputin / Magick (Anya Taylor-Joy), Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams), San Guthrie / Cannonball (Charlie Heaton), Danielle Moonstar / Mirage (Blu Hunt), and Roberto da Costa / Sunspot (Henry Zaga) – standing proudly in front of the asylum that for a time kept them from realizing their true potential as some of the most powerful teens on the planet.

Believe it or not, it looks like the much-delayed release of THE NEW MUTANTS will happen this month and it's still set to take place theaters that have already reopened.

According to "Variety", theater owners have been alerted by Disney that the movie is still set to arrive on August 28, 2020, and they will even be able to start selling advanced tickets next week. This is hopefully a very clear signal that Disney does truly intend to get the film on the big screen and in front of moviegoers as promised. Given the film's release date track record, I would forgive you for not being too optimistic.

Disney has shuffled its release calendar around due to the COVID-19 pandemic with some movies being bumped to next year while movies like ARTEMIS FOWL and MULAN were shifted to Disney+. Despite all these moves, THE NEW MUTANTS has stayed put on its last given release date with no plans of a move to streaming or Disney announcing another delay. The industry is fully expecting the film to live up to its curse and be shifted once again but Disney sent an email to exhibitors detailing its theatrical release plans and in that email, it was explained that theaters can begin selling tickets on August 18.

But how well will THE NEW MUTANTS do? The film will have the distinction of being the first major blockbuster to get a wide theatrical release since the closures back in mid-March. Right now, there are an estimated 1,300 screens that are open in the U.S of 6,000. Drive-ins have been a major force propping the box office up in recent months but things are still a bit unpredictable. Most major theater chains are eyeing reopening by mid-to-late August so THE NEW MUTANTS could get more screens by its release date but how it will perform is a big question mark during this current box office climate.

The X-MEN spin-off, starring Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga, follows five young mutants that are just discovering their abilities while being held in a secret facility against their will. They will have eventually fight to escape their past sins and save themselves. It has been a long road to the screen for THE NEW MUTANTS but hopefully, this sign from Disney shows the film will actually get its chance to be seen on the big screen.

Do YOU think Disney will stick to the final release date for THE NEW MUTANTS?
