Exclusive 1:1 Interview: Ethan Hawke talks Boyhood!

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

One of the coolest things about Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD, which documents the 12-year span of a young man's (Ellar Coltrane) life, is that it's not just the child we see grow: everyone in the film matures before our eyes. One such person is Ethan Hawke, Linklater's longtime collaborator, who plays the not-quite-mature father of the boy who must go through life's rites of passage. Think of it in these terms: When Hawke began filming, he had recently been nominated for a Best Supporting Oscar nomination for TRAINING DAY; the BOYHOOD crew only completed filming last year.

In the below interview, Hawke and I speak about the extraordinary film they've crafted, his input into the script and watching Ellar Coltrane go from child to young adult.
