Exit Morgan Freeman, enter Idris Elba as the new Alex Cross

Tireless crime writer James Patterson saw his detective Alex Cross come to life thanks to Morgan Freeman in KISS THE GIRLS and ALONG CAME A SPIDER, but the character is coming back to screens a bit different.

After his strong work on HBO’s “The Wire” and solid supporting work in loads of movies (ROCKnROLLA, THE LOSERS, AMERICAN GANGSTER), Idris Elba is taking the lead for CROSS, an adaptation of the twelfth book in the series.

The novel saw Cross leaving the FBI to open up a private psychology practice, and trying to stop The Butcher, a serial rapist/murderer who may be somehow connected to the murder of Alex’s wife.

The project is being put together independently before approaching a studio. A younger screen relaunch of the character has been in the works for a while — Tyrese Gibson was linked to the role a few years back.
