Ghost of Tsushima, movie, Playstation Studios, Chad Stahelski

Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are developing a film adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima, with Chad Stahelski (John Wick), set to direct. Developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Tsushima recently sold over 6.5 million copies since July 2020. Not only did I purchase a copy for myself, but I also got the platinum for that sucker too.

Per Sucker Punch, here is the official synopsis for Ghost of Tsushima:

The year is 1274. Samurai warriors are the legendary defenders of Japan—until the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the island of Tsushima, wreaking havoc and conquering the local population. As one of the last surviving samurai, Jin Sakai, you rise from the ashes to fight back. But honorable tactics won’t lead you to victory. You must move beyond your samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting—the way of the Ghost—as you wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan.

While he's fighting for the good of his people, Jin's methods of combat are looked down upon by many around him, particularly his Uncle, Lord Shimura, who raised him after his father, Kazumasa Sakai, died. According to Lord Shimura, a samurai looks his enemy in the eye. To do anything else is dishonorable, though Jin argues that times are changing, and the old ways might not win the day. I suspect this will be a major plot point in the film. Out with the old, in with the stealth kills and savage war tactics.

Stahelski, Alex Young, and Jason Spitz are producing through their 87Eleven Entertainment studio. Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan will produce through Playstation Productions. Meanwhile, Sucker Punch Productions will serve as Executive Producers, with Peter Kang overseeing.

“We’re excited to be partnering with Chad and 87Eleven Entertainment, to bring their vision of Jin’s story to the big screen. We love working with creative partners like Chad, who have a passion for our games, ensuring we can create rich adaptations that will excite our fans and new audiences,” said Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions.

Ghost of Tsushima is the second film project to come from the partnership between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, with Uncharted already set for release on February 11, 2022.
