HBO Max content chief talks landing Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Zack Snyder, Justice League, HBO Max

When news hit last week that Zack Snyder's JUSTICE LEAGUE is  happening, and that it's bound for HBO Max in the year 2021, a subset of superhero film fans lost their collective minds. Rumors of Snyder having his own version of the film – which had been completed by director Joss Whedon after Snyder had stepped away from the project due to a family-related tragedy – had been circulating for some time. However, it wasn't until the filmmaker hosted a recent Watch Party for his 2013 Superman film, MAN OF STEEL, that he'd confirmed that the project would indeed see the light of day. Naturally, now that Snyderphiles know the film is coming, they'll be wanting to learn every waking detail related to its existence, including how long the project has been in the works at HBO Max.

This is where HBO Max content chief, Kevin Reilly, comes in. Recently while speaking with Business Insider about HBO's plans for the high-profile streaming service, Reilly revealed that keeping the deal for Zack Snyder's Justice League secret for a number of months was no easy task:

"I forget when Zack and Deborah [Snyder] first gave us the sense of where they were heading, but even from that meeting, me and my team felt it was something we really wanted to do. There were a lot of issues involved to figure out how we could deliver on his vision, and a myriad of legal issues. We've been sitting on this for quite some time but working on it. It was obviously a secret project given the high level of interest, but we were chipping away at it piece by piece. There was some strategy but also some serendipity in how we got over the hurdle of some of those issues just before the launch [of Max]," said Reilly.

When pressed to discuss some of the issues related to the matter, Reilly simply replied, "That's a whole separate interview [laughs]. Let's file that as a follow up."

Regardless of what legal hurdles the studio had to clear in order to bring Zack Snyder's Justice League to HBO Max, all appears to have worked out in the end. Granted it will be a while before the project makes its HBO Max debut, but that just gives you more time to plan your #ReleasetheSnyderCut Watch Party. For real, you owe it to yourselves to go all out for this one. I'm talking about costumes, superhero-themed decorations, Justice League inspired shots and so much more. With any luck, the need for social distancing will have calmed down by the time that Snyder's version of JUSTICE LEAGUE arrives, and your party can be just as over-the-top as Jared Leto's take on the Joker. Hey-o!
