Here’s the first look at Jack Black in Richard Linklater’s Bernie

One person that I anxiously await films from is Richard Linklater. He hasn’t done anything since 2008’s ME & ORSON WELLES. Now we have the deets and some stills from his upcoming film, BERNIE.

The last thing I recall Linklater saying he was working on was the 12-year project with Ethan Hawke. Then out of nowhere comes this black comedy starring Jack Black. The film centers on a Texas mortician (Black) who, “commits a crime but is still popular within the community, especially with one surly, wealthy widow (Shirley MacLaine).” Black and Linklater last worked together on 2003’s THE SCHOOL OF ROCK. BERNIE does not have domestic distribution, but will open the 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival.

Linklater has said this about the film, “[And it’s] set in a little town of Huntsville, East Texas, kind of a little black comedy. It’s my ‘Fargo’ in East Texas, where I group up, so it’s crazy local with fifty characters. It’s about a funeral home assistant who befriends this old lady. It’s kind of a true crime story.”

We have another still below from BERNIE via /Film.
