Jaimie Alexander talks Lady Sif and missing out on being Wonder Woman

One of the great things about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that its secondary characters can be just as great as the main ones. The world of Asgard is full of great characters, including Jaimie Alexander's Lady Sif. Alexander is set to reprise the role in the upcoming THOR: RAGNAROK alongside Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Mark Ruffalo, and although Lady Sif hasn't exactly had the opportunity to become as fleshed out as I would like, Jaimie Alexander revealed in a recent interview with Variety that she genuinely loves stepping into Lady Sif's armour.

I genuinely love the character Sif. Each time I get to play her, there’s this growth in the character and we find out more of who she is. That is a blast, because I’ve been able to slowly create this woman while still taking directions from all the comic books that existed before my performance. It’s interesting that Sif has such a big backstory, whereas Jane has no backstory at all; they’re very opposite while at the same time both very tough and vulnerable. It’s a bit of a niche for me, I guess.

When the search began for the perfect actress to play Wonder Woman, Jaimie Alexander was at the top the list for many fans. Obviously she didn't end up getting the role of Wonder Woman in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, but she's not exactly bitter about losing out to Gal Gadot.

I’m excited to see what she’s going to do with the role. I was one of a few people that were an obvious choice for Wonder Woman, but it was never going to happen. I’m contracted with Marvel and it would (be) strange. Sif, in her way, is Marvel’s Wonder Woman. They’re both ethereal and have armor and a sword, and have special abilities; the physicality of the role is very similar. The thing I really enjoy about Marvel is that they start with a character first and all the explosions and costumes, the glitz and glam, are secondary to who the actual character is deep down. That’s something I haven’t really been able to find with DC Comics. I know that’s a bold statement, but it’s been my experience.

THOR: RAGNAROK is set for a November 3, 2017 release and BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will hit theaters on March 25, 2016.

Would you have prefered to see Jaimie Alexander as Wonder Woman, or did Warner Bros make the right choice with Gal Gadot?
