James Gunn spoke to Marvel & DC about a Guardians/Suicide Squad crossover

Director James Gunn is getting the best of both worlds by helming DC's The Suicide Squad and returning to the MCU by directing the third Guardians of the Galaxy film. As a filmmaker, it puts him in a very rare space to dabble with both comic book entities so it comes as no surprise that the director has playfully pitched the idea of crossing over The Suicide Squad with The Guardians of the Galaxy.

In response to a fan on Twitter, Gunne revealed that he has talked to Marvel and DC execs in the past about doing a Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad crossover. Gunn does point out that he just "casually talked to the powers-that-be" about the crossover idea and that it's very unlikely to happen but he doesn't believe it's an impossibility either. Such a crossover is very unlikely to happen but both companies have collided a handful of times in comic book form. The most recent crossover between the two rival companies happened about 18 years ago. Both entities jointly published "DC vs. Marvel" and "JLA/Avengers" comics in 1996 and 2003. Both of these issues feature some iconic crossover moments, such as Darkseid wielding the Infinity Gauntlet and Wonder Woman lifting Thor's hammer. Back in 1976, Marvel and DC also published a crossover of Superman and Spider-Man under the title, "Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man." Making this all happen in live-action movie form, is a bit more of a logistical issue. Contracts would likely require strict stipulations that would include a fair or equal amount of screen time for each character, which might be a big headache with a huge ensemble featuring The Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. There is also the issue of merchandising rights because an event film like this would be a merchandising bonanza and both companies would want a big piece of the pie. 

While Gunn has casually brought this up to both Marvel and DC, the director does seem more interested in a solid story rather than trying to create the ultimate mashup. It's one of those things where this concept is fun to think about but if the story isn't there, it wouldn't be worth it. In another tweet, Gunn says "I find it disconcerting at times that many folks seem more interested in crossovers, cameos, references & post-credit scenes than they do the actual story & characters of a specific film! When making a film I spend 99.9% of my time thinking about story & character & .1% the rest." I'm happy to see that James Gunn has his priorities straight.
