Jeff Goldblum on returning as Ian Malcolm in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm was the standout character of the original JURASSIC PARK, with his cool, intelligent persona and all-black attire, coming off like Bill Nye meets Johnny Cash. Fans rejoiced when they heard he would be coming back to the franchise for a part in JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM, and now the actor is sharing what it was like to return to the world of dinos.

The actor was on Variety’s Playback Podcast promoting his new movie, ISLE OF DOGS, when he was asked about returning as Dr. Malcolm for FALLEN KINGDOM. He hinted his role is indeed small, but that it was fun to return as a man who will fight for the rights of all living creatures – no matter how prehistoric.

I enjoyed getting a chance to dress up in black again and say a couple of things about science and being a proponent of science. The human curiosity and investigation and fact-based storehouse that we have is deeply valuable and must be esteemed and celebrated, but those who would use the animal kingdom and our scientific achievement and knowledge for profit or cheap entertainment or ticket sales or, heaven forbid, militaristic power or leverage, 'woe be to them.' So I liked getting another crack at that.

Goldblum’s casting was announced sometime last year, and ever since fans have been speculating how big his part is. We got our first glimpse of him giving some sort of speech in a courtroom in the first trailer, but there hasn’t been anything of him beyond that. Chances are this is just one small part of a small role, but still, any amount of Ian Malcolm is a welcome amount.

Goldblum’s Malcolm has always been trying to warn us about tampering with nature, what with his magnificent quote, “Life finds a way.” I’d hope he’d have a more substantial role in the new movie, but I doubt that and would imagine this scene in the trailer is the majority of what we’re gonna see.  But, hey, that's enough screen time for him to steal the whole damn movie.

JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM arrives June 22.
