Jennifer Lopez admits to being “let down” by Oscar snub for Hustlers

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Oscar season has come & gone but one of the snubs from the season still lingers. Jennifer Lopez received some of the best notices of her career for HUSTLERS with many critics saying she was a sure thing for an Oscar nomination. The road to Oscar seemed to point in that direction with Lopez receiving several nominations for Best Supporting Actress from many critics circles as well as a Golden Globe & SAG nomination. Despite all the build up, come Oscar nomination morning Lopez's name wasn't among the nominees & she's finally admitting a bit of disappointment.

Lopez was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey during the 2020 Vision: Your Life In Focus Tour, a stop of which was held Saturday in Ingelwood. The pop singer/actress confessed that she “felt like I let everyone down a little bit” when she wasn’t nominated:

"I was sad, I was a little sad because there was a lot of buildup to it. There were so many articles, I got so many good notices – more than ever in my career – and there was a lot of: “She’s going to get nominated for an Oscar, it’s going to happen, if it doesn’t you’re crazy. I’m reading all the articles going: “Oh my god, could this happen?” And then it didn’t and I was like: “Ouch,” it was a little bit of a letdown."

It wasn't all about herself for the actress. She also felt she let down her team who has been with the performer for years:

"Also, I felt like my whole team – most of my team has been with me for years, 20, 25 years – and I think they had a lot of hopes on that and they wanted it too, so I felt like I let everyone down a little bit."

Despite not securing a nomination, HUSTLERS was a huge hit, grossing over $100 million domestically & it received some of the best reviews of any film last year. I personally thought she deserved a nom because there were layers in that performance & she displayed movie star magnetism in a similar way that Brad Pitt did in ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. It's a very confident performance that I thought was deserving of the praise and hopefully it will make the actress seek similar roles that challenges her range because she has a tendency to play it safe in disposable rom-coms that make decent money but aren't too memorable down the road. HUSTLERS reminded me of the promise she showed in 1998's underrated OUT OF SIGHT which proved she was more than just a pretty face.

Do YOU think Jennifer Lopez deserved a nomination for HUSTLERS?
