Keanu Reeves battles dragons, samurai warriors, demons and Rinko Kikuchi in the first trailer for 47 Ronin

With all of the hubbub surrounding the struggles behind the scenes with 47 RONIN, I was expecting a lot less from this trailer. First time director Carl Rinsch was reportedly banned from the editing room in what many were considering the biggest potential bomb after WORLD WAR Z. Well, WORLD WAR Z didn’t bomb and now we have a look at 47 RONIN. A bomb it does not appear to be.

In fact, this looks pretty damn fun. Sure, a lot of the scenery is gorgeously shot and will likely look good in 3D, I am also getting a very 300 vibe from this trailer. The special effects look decent, but they are obviously special effects. The dragon especially looks cartoony to me, but I may be nitpicking. If anything, a quiet Neo-esque Keanu Reeves may work perfectly for this tale.

“From ancient Japan’s most enduring tale, the epic 3D fantasy-adventure 47 Ronin is born. Keanu Reeves leads the cast as Kai, an outcast who joins Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada), the leader of the 47 outcast samurai. Together they seek vengeance upon the treacherous overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. To restore honor to their homeland, the warriors embark upon a quest that challenges them with a series of trials that would destroy ordinary warriors.”

Rinko Kikuchi looks hot again. Between this and PACIFIC RIM, I have a new movie crush. I am a little concerned that this movie may be opening at an odd time of year with a release date of December 25, 2013, but an action-packed period movie was a big success last year as well. Hopefully this movie is as entertaining as it looks. All hail the return of Keanu Reeves!
