Kevin Smith says Batman V Superman will set up future Justice League movies

In a recent podcast, Ben Affleck's BFF Kevin Smith shared his thoughts on the title BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, and also made some interesting comments about Warner Bros. and DC's plans for their cinematic universe.

Kevin Smith starts by saying he isn't a fan of the new official title.

It’s a bit of a mouthful. And also, I don’t know why Batman V. Superman. Why not just throw the “s” in there? Or spell it or something like that. Or honestly, every comic book fan on the planet, who is a DC comic book fan, I think we all wanted to see Batman/Superman: World’s Finest.

But Smith also says the title makes sense, and says BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will be the first of 5 or 6 JUSTICE LEAGUE films that will tell one giant story.

But look, they’re obviously beginning something, and there’s a stretch of these flick, and so this is the beginning of the Justice League, as we all suspected as they were announcing that cast. We were like, ‘This is the beginning of a Justice League movie.’ From what I understand now, it’s no longer like, ‘This is Superman 2.’ They’re not doing these things. They’re doing like, ‘Here’s Man of Steel. Here’s Batman/Superman: Dawn of Justice.’ The next one is not like a sequel to one of the characters. They’re just going to keep building their universe for about five or six movies. But all of them…it’s supposed to tell one massive story, which is all Justice League oriented.

So instead of starting with solo films for their comic book characters like Marvel did with their cinematic universe, it appears Warner Bros. and DC will set things up with BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE before heading into a JUSTICE LEAGUE film, and then they'll move on to solo movies. This doesn't come as a huge surprise, but I am curious as to what the "one massive story" might be. Is it based on a big story arc from the comics, or something brand new?

However we should also remember Kevin Smith isn't part of the production team for BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, and just because he is pals with Ben Affleck doesn't mean he knows everything that's going on with DC's plans for a cinematic universe. Not saying he's wrong, but we should take his comments with a grain of salt since he isn't actually working with DC or Warner Bros.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will be in theaters on May 6, 2016.
