Marvel’s Inhumans movie may be Vin Diesel’s mystery Phase 3 project

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Stan Lee is no Kevin Feige, but he still has some knowledge of where his creations are headed on the silver screen. During a recent interview, Lee told TooFab that Phase Three would feature Black Panther, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, and “probably the Inhumans”. The Inhumans first appeared in an issue of Fantastic Four and are a race of genetically modified humans given spectacular powers by a vapor known as the Terrigen Mists, populated by characters with names like Black Bolt, Medusa and Karnak.

We also know that Vin Diesel has been approached by Marvel not just for the role of Groot in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY but also for a Phase Three project that Diesel called a “merging of brands”. While he referred to it as “fresh IP” as well, could that brand merging be in reference to the upcoming Marvel Comics event called Inhumanity?

The Hollywood Reporter explains the comic event for us:

Later this year, Marvel is set to overhaul the concept in an event called “Inhumanity,” in which many regular humans will be revealed to be descended from Inhumans, giving them latent powers that could manifest in later life — in other words, a version of the central “mutant” concept of X-Men, but one whose movie rights are controlled by Marvel (“Inhumanity” will lead into a January-launching series, Inhuman, as part of Marvel’s All-New Marvel NOW! publicity push).

Disney and Marvel have been forced to skirt the mutant characters due to 20th Century Fox owning X-MEN and mutant related titles, but the Inhumanity event could make that a moot topic. Giving everyday humans superpowers opens the door for all new characters, one of which could be who Vin Diesel is talking about. If this comes to pass, it could put to rest any chance of the X-MEN crossing into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Disney would have no need for those titles and could just invent new ones.

While no Phase Three movies are formally announced yet, I assume we will know more sometime next year when CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER opens on April 4, 2014 and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY on August 1, 2014.
