The Avengers 2 release date confirmed plus a logline for Guardians of the Galaxy

We got wind of a potential release date for Joss Whedon’s THE AVENGERS 2 last week, but today comes the official announcement for the slot, which is set for May 1, 2015.  For a minute there I thought I wouldn’t have anything to live for, but it looks like I’m going to continue to draw breath for at least another three years so I can see this sucker blow my mind when it hits theaters.  Okay, so I’m exaggerating a little, but still…that’s some damn fine news.

Here’s the press release:

The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the biggest Super Hero blockbuster and third highest grossing film of all time, Marvel’s The Avengers. Joss Whedon returns to write and direct the UNTITLED MARVEL’S AVENGERS SEQUEL set for release May 1, 2015.

With Whedon back at the helm I think many fans are breathing a sigh of relief.  While I’m sure that there are a good handful of directors who could’ve handled the sequel, I feel that consistency and understanding of the material are key, so getting Whedon on board keeps the train on the tracks, so to speak.

Also today, we have a small synopsis for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, which goes like this:

“About a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.”

I’ll leave it up to you guys to speculate in which directions that logline could take you…

This updates the current Marvel slate as such:

IRON MAN 3 on May 3, 2013

THOR: THE DARK WORLD on November 8, 2013

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER on April 4, 2014

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY on August 1, 2014

THE AVENGERS 2 on May 1, 2015

There’s some “wiggle room” between GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and THE AVENGERS 2, so perhaps they’ll squeeze Edgar Wright’s ANT MAN in there somewhere, which would be my best guess.  I’m sure an announcement for that project will hit soon, but until then, it’s time to update your calendars and start counting down to yet another superhero extravaganza.

Unless your David Cronenberg, of course.  More as these develop. Oh, and don’t forget, THE AVENGERS hits blu-ray next month on September 25, 2012.
