Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a frontrunner for Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Just when we thought the list was being narrowed, a new contender joins the list for the female lead in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER.

Just last week we reported that the five actresses testing for the role of Sharon Carter (niece/daughter to Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter from the first film) were Emilia Clarke, Jessica Brown Findlay, Imogen Poots, Alison Brie and Teresa Palmer. Now, Latino Review says that Winstead is “has the most traction” with Disney and Marvel for the role. Nothing is concrete at this point, but Winstead does have the most star power out of the bunch and is already in heavy awards talk for her role in SMASHED.

I am personally partial to Alison Brie but I cannot deny that Winstead is a major hottie and a pretty good actress as well. She has some familiarity with superhero movies having appeared in the Disney flick SKY HIGH in which she played the villain. While that was by no means anywhere close to the scope of a movie like CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, it goes to show she has worked in an FX heavy production before.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is slated to open April 4th, 2014.
