You read that right, folks. If everything goes according to plan, Mel Gibson will return to the director's chair to helm HACKSAW RIDGE. RIRDGE tells the true story of Private First Class Desmond T. Doss, who refused to kill or carry a weapon. Despite being ostracized by the other soldiers for his beliefs, he saved 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa. The man suffered through grenade shrapnel and even being hit by a sniper in the process of saving his fellow soldiers, thus earning him two Bronze Stars, three Purple Hearts and the Congressional Medal of Honor. As of now, Andrew Garfield is in talks to play Doss.

Say what you will about the man, but Gibson proved to be a hell of a director with the likes of BRAVEHEART, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST and APOCALYPTO. It's been 8 years since his last directorial effort hit screens, and while it's nice to see him on-screen in popcorn flicks such as MACHETE KILLS and THE EXPENDABLES 3, I think it's safe to say his work behind the camera has a lot more substance going for it. Gibson would be a welcome return and this film would provide a nice reminder to folks on just how good Garfield can be as an actor.
