Meryl Streep to reunite with Mamma Mia director for Margaret Thatcher biopic

Few things set off Oscar alarms like A) biopics of historical figures and B) Meryl Streep. Combine those two things together and you’re almost sure to catch at least a handful of nominations.

Such is the case with this latest bit of new which has Meryl Streep in talks with MAMMA MIA! Director Phyllida Lloyd to play Margaret Thatcher in THATCHER, a biopic of the long-serving British leader.

The film is set in 1982 and tracks Thatcher as she tries to save her career in the 17 days preceding the 1982 Falklands War. The 2 1/2-month war was a turning point for the prime minister, who, after the victory, saw her approval ratings double and went on to win a second term. Sounds…riveting?

Seeing as Lloyd only has MAMMA MIA! under her belt, I would imagine this would be quite the task, but you could probably put Meryl Streep in a movie directed by an orangutan with ADD and she would turn out a worthy performance. Though in this film I will be curious to hear how she manages a convincing British accent.
