Monster House & Poltergeist director to helm Five Nights at Freddy’s movie

Five Nights at Freddy's Gil Kenan

Back in April, we brought you word that a movie based on the survival horror video game Five Nights at Freddy’s was in the works at Warner Bros. from producers Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg, and now Deadline is reporting that a filmmaker has been found to helm the project. Gil Kenan (MONSTER HOUSE, CITY OF EMBER, POLTERGEIST remake) is set to direct, and will also co-pen the film’s script with video game writer Tyler Burton Smith (Sleeping Dogs, Prototype 2).

The point-and-click game centers around a Chuck-E-Cheese-like pizzeria that features animatronic characters, who come to life and terrorize a night security guard while the restaurant is closed. As a whole, the series has received decent reviews from critics (although most still consider the first to be the best one), and has developed a sizable online following. Five Nights at Freddy’s fans: Do you think Gil Kenan is a solid choice to bring the video game to life on the big screen, or would you rather see a different director behind the camera ?

There’s no word on when production could start on FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S, but if things move along well in the development stage, I could easily see it hitting theaters sometime next year or early 2017.
