Netflix orders new series based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels

Grab your hex bags, set your messenger ravens loose, and get ready for another trip down the fantasy sci-fi rabbit hole, because Netflix has ordered SHADOW AND BONE, an eight-episode series based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows Grishaverse novels. Set to be written by BIRD BOX scribe Eric Heisserer, and Shawn Levy, the executive producer of Netflix's STRANGER THINGS, the series will take place in Bardugo’s Grishaverse, a world torn asunder by dark events, strange creatures, and a fierce magical war between rival factions.

According to Deadline, who exclusively broke the news about SHADOW AND BONE, earlier today, Bardugo's tale takes place in a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, a young soldier uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her. Thugs, thieves, assassins and saints are at war now, and it will take more than magic to survive.

Heisserer created the series for Netflix, which arrives as part of an overall deal between the streaming giant and Levy's 21 Laps banner. In addition to creating the show, Heisserer will also write, showrun, and co-executive produce alongside Bardugo. Pouya Shahbazian will also executive produce adjacent to Bardugo, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barr. As part of an effort to use the project's source material to its fullest extent, SHADOW AND BONE will merge both the Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows novels together to create one truly epic adventure.

In the past, Bardugo's Grishaverse novels have sold over 2.5 million copies and have been translated into 38 languages all across the globe. For those of you looking to explore the Grishaverse collection before SHADOW AND BONE hits Netflix (it's gonna be a while), you should know that a third installment of the series, titled King of Scars, is set to hit bookstore shelves later this month.
