Dora and the Lost City of Gold spot teases adventure, Danny Trejo as Boots

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Children across the world fell in love the with the animated series DORA THE EXPLORER and the plucky title star who went on adventures and taught young viewers Spanish along the way. Now she’s getting the live-action treatment with a new movie, and now a teenager, she’s going on a new adventure that takes her to a strange new land – high school. The new trailer for DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD teases her new journey that takes her from the mystical realm of P.E. to an ancient lost city and, oh yeah, reminds you that Danny Trejo is providing the voice for the CGI monkey Boots.

Anyone who has seen the trailer for this movie starring Isabela Moner in the title role (perhaps attached to movies like ALADDIN and TOY STORY 4) won’t see anything new here, with it featuring the same gags and the family-friendly action-comedy moments. The target audience seems to be both young children and slightly older children who may be familiar with the series, but still young enough to find the fart gags and slapstick amusing. While it could surprise some older viewers and provide enough laughs and excitement to entertain undemanding older viewers, I can’t imagine anyone but families heading out to see this one come August.

But, that’s to be expected. This movie is clearly aimed at a certain crowd, even if that same crowd may still be heading out to theaters to see THE LION KING during its fourth week in theaters. But coming out in August means it has the whole month to bring in family crowds, so surely Nickelodeon and Paramount have hopes for more Dora adventures in the future. But, seriously, Danny Trejo is voicing a monkey, and they're not even hiding that fact.

Here's the synopsis:

Having spent most of her life exploring the jungle with her parents, nothing could prepare Dora (Isabela Moner) for her most dangerous adventure ever – High School. Always the explorer, Dora quickly finds herself leading Boots (her best friend, a monkey), Diego (Jeff Wahlberg), a mysterious jungle inhabitant (Eugenio Derbez), and a rag tag group of teens on a live-action adventure to save her parents (Eva Longoria, Michael Peña) and solve the impossible mystery behind a lost city of gold.

DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD is in theaters August 9.
