New extended look at Mortal Engines teases a VFX feast for the eyes

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

In case you forgot, MORTAL ENGINES – the expensive-looking franchise hopeful from producer Peter Jackson – comes out in just one month. On that note, it’s a little surprising that there hasn’t been more coming out in the way of posters, trailers and all other sorts of promotional material, especially given how big this movie looks. If you were still wondering what this movie is and what it’s about, a new extended look has come out teasing a bit more of the story and showing off even more of the impressive visual effects.

Directed by long-time Jackson collaborator Christian Rivers in his major directorial debut, ENGINES stars Hera Hilmar as Hester Shaw, a fugitive assassin out to get Thaddeus Valentine (Hugo Weaving), the man who killed her mother. The story takes place in a world where roving cities fight each other for resources and survival, and with that in mind, it makes perfect subject matter for a special effects extravaganza, which this movie appears to be (if nothing else). I’m curious to hear what people think of this one, especially as it competes for attention in the crowded December schedule.

Here is the synopsis:

Hundreds of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, a mysterious young woman, Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar), emerges as the only one who can stop London — now a giant, predator city on wheels — from devouring everything in its path. Feral, and fiercely driven by the memory of her mother, Hester joins forces with Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), an outcast from London, along with Anna Fang (Jihae), a dangerous outlaw with a bounty on her head.

The rest of the cast includes Robert Sheehan, Jihae, Ronan Raferty, Leila George, Patrick Malahide, and Stephen Lang and hits theaters December 14.
