New images from Star Wars: The Force Awakens; plus new cast details

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

It's a little hard to pay attention to any other movie news after that wonderful new teaser for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS dropped this morning, but lets try to give some other films some love as well, kidding! It's essentially Star Wars day so we might as well embrace it. Those of you who caught the live-stream of the STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS panel at Star Wars Celebration this morning will have already seen these images, but now is your chance to see them all over again.

Over the course of the panel the various stars of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS were presented, including the trio who will form the film's leads. John Boyega, who plays Finn, spoke a little on where we find his character as the film begins saying that "Finn is in incredible danger and the way he decides to react to this danger changes his life and launches him into the 'Star Wars' universe in a very unique way."

Oscar Isaac was quite excited about his character, Poe Dameron, saying that "he's the biggest friggin' pilot in the galaxy. He’s been sent on a mission by a certain princess and he ends up coming across Mr. John Boyega’s character and their fates are forever intertwined."

Despite many assuming the desert planet featured in the first teaser was Tatooine, actress Daisy Ridley confirms that that is not the case and that the name of the planet on which her character resides goes by Jakku. We of course know that Daisy plays Rey, a self sufficient scavenger who lives a solitary life “until she meets another character and the adventure begins."

Despite all the CGI which will surely be present in the final film, I'm so grateful that J.J. Abrams has embraced the practical as much as possible; the actors actually are outside, they're handling real objects, and are reacting to real explosions. Even in what little footage we've seen so far the film already feels more "real" than all of the prequel trilogy combined.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS will (finally) hit theaters on December 18, 2015 and after today's trailer I cannot wait to be sitting in the theater watching a brand new Star Wars adventure unfold on the big-screen. Meanwhile the Star Wars Celebration will run until April 19 at the Anaheim Convention Center, so you can expect plenty more Star Wars news to come!
