New teaser for Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico shows the origin of the drug war

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

After spending the past three seasons chronicling the rise and fall of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar as well as the cartels which sprang to power after his death, Narcos will be resetting for what was to be its fourth season. Narcos: Mexico will chronicle the origins of the modern drug war in Mexico through the eyes of two characters, undercover DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña) and Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna), the leader of the Guadalajara cartel.

Narcos showrunner Eric Newman always knew that they would get to Mexico eventually, telling THR last year that, "The origins of the Guadalajara cartel are in the late 1970s and early 1980s, so Narcos is going back in time. We always knew that we would get to Mexico eventually. A key team comprised of myself and the guys I really trust and work very closely with — [director] Andi Baiz, [co-creators] Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro — have been discussing how to best transition to Mexico as early as season two. We decided on the Guadalajara cartel because it represents the beginning of the modern Mexican drug trade. It makes sense to start there."

The official synopsis for Narcos: Mexico:

Narcos: Mexico will explore the origins of the modern drug war by going back to its roots, beginning at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganized confederation of independent growers and dealers. Witness the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s as Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna) takes the helm, unifying traffickers in order to build an empire. When DEA agent Kiki Camarena ((Michael Peña) moves his wife and young son from California to Guadalajara to take on a new post, he quickly learns that his assignment will be more challenging than he ever could have imagined. As Kiki garners intelligence on Félix and becomes more entangled in his mission, a tragic chain of events unfold, affecting the drug trade and the war against it for years to come.

Narcos: Mexico will debut on Netflix on November 16th.
