Oscar Isaac fondly recalls being upstaged by C-3PO on last day of Episode IX

The arrival of STAR WARS: EPISODE IX and the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga will be an emotional time for all of us, but perhaps none more so than the people who were there making the movie, having been with the series for years. Actor Oscar Isaac, who plays ace pilot and brash rebel Poe Dameron, recently shared a few details about his last day on set of the space epic, and while there were claps and nice words dedicated to him, he recalls all that energy being passed along soon after to none other than the golden droid – Anthony Daniels, the actor who brought C-3PO to life for 40 years.

Isaac was a guest on THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JIMMY FALLON while promoting the new movie TRIPLE FRONTIER, and before they got into the heist thriller, he was asked about wrapping the last movie in his STAR WARS trilogy. Isaac fondly recalls his last day on the set and the impact the movies have had on him, but that after he got his emotional sendoff some of that thunder was lost when it was time for Daniels’ own farewell.

“It was such a milestone. What was particularly special was the day that I finished on these three massive movies that for me have been such a huge part of my life, right after it was like, ‘Okay, Oscar’s done.’ And then I said a few words. ‘And it’s also Anthony Daniels’ last day on set!’ Way to take the thunder.”

The final day was a tearjerker for both of them, as Daniels has been there since the literal beginning of the series back in 1977. Having been on all sorts of SW sets while donning the golden costume, Isaac recalled how Daniels would always be on about how much fun he was having this time around.

“[Daniels] was super emotional about it and hanging up the golden cowl. And I think, really, and I mean this, this time he kept saying this was the most fun he’s had ’cause he had so many fun things to do and we got to work a lot together. It was just amazing to see that piece of history close.”

We’ve been reading plenty of fond farewells as the movie wrapped recently, with director JJ Abrams posting a picture of stars Isaac, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, tweeting, “There is no adequate way to thank this truly magical crew and cast. I’m forever indebted to you all.”

"Today was 3PO's last on Episode IX. He's sad – so am I. But we're so proud to have worked with such a lovely, talented cast & crew lead by J.J. & Kathy,” Daniels himself tweeted on his last day. “I'll miss everyone but I'm glad to know that we've been making something exceptional together, to share with the waiting world.”
