Pieces of a Woman: Trailer for Vanessa Kirby Netflix film sparks Oscar buzz

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

PIECES OF A WOMAN made some waves back in September when it premiered at the 77th Venice International Film Festival, leading to a Volpi Cup for Best Actress for its star, Vanessa Kirby. Now Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for the film along with when we will get to see the new drama that co-stars Shia LaBeouf.

Netflix has announced that the film will be released on the streamer on January 7, 2021, following a run in select theaters that begins on December 30, 2020. In the film, "Martha (Vanessa Kirby) and Sean (Shia LaBeouf) are a Boston couple on the verge of parenthood whose lives change irrevocably when a home birth ends in unimaginable tragedy. Thus begins a yearlong odyssey for Martha, who must navigate her grief while working through fractious relationships with Sean and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn), along with the publicly vilified midwife (Molly Parker), whom she must face in court. Directed by Kornél Mundruczó (WHITE GOD, winner of the 2014 Prix Un Certain Regard Award), written by Kata Wéber, and executive produced by Martin Scorsese, PIECES OF A WOMAN is a deeply personal, searing, and ultimately transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss."

Vanessa Kirby's performance in the film garnered early Oscar buzz for the actress and a lot of that buzz carried over to when we reviewed the film during the Toronto International Film Festival. While some of that buzz has subsided, the film's release in select theaters, followed by its Netflix debut, should reignite some of that talk and make Kirby a contender once again.
