RIP Sidney Lumet

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

We would be remiss if we started the week without recognizing the passing of the great director Sidney Lumet. The man lived a full life and this weekend succumbed to lymphoma at the age of 86. He was still directing as recently as 2007, with the rather excellent BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOUR DEAD.

But it’s his earlier work that we will remember him for the most. He was the mastermind behind such classics as 12 ANGRY MEN, SERPICO, DOG DAY AFTERNOON and NETWORK.

He earned five Oscar nominations, and was awarded an honorary statue in 2005 for his long and storied career. He grew up in NYC, and as a result, a great number of his films were shot there.

He was a fantastic director to be admired and emulated, and he will be missed. Check out one of his best scenes from 12 ANGRY MEN below
