Rocketman trailer: Taron Egerton embraces the extraordinary as Elton John

Elton John has been a major fixture in the music community for decades, lending his voice and personality to countless classic songs meant to move your feet and your heart. He's lent his talent to movies (THE LION KING) and had roles in them (KINGSMAN 2: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE), but now it’s finally time for the icon to get a massive biopic, and the new movie ROCKETMAN finds fellow KINGSMAN actor Taron Egerton taking the stage as John – singing all the songs himself and fitting perfectly into the wonderfully elaborate costumes. The new, official trailer is here to tease John’s journey from small-time piano man to arena-touring sensation, dealing with all the naysayers along the way. Oh, and where can I get a pair of those winged shoes?

The first teaser trailer did a fine job showcasing the visual approach of the movie, as well as offering a taste of Egerton’s vocals as John. But between the recent featurette and this new trailer, we have a more complete portrait of this movie’s fantastical-musical approach with the leading man stepping into the superstar’s shoes both literally and figuratively. The more I hear Egerton sing as John the more I’m sold, and the dance numbers and production design look so colorful and energetic that with everything else in the mix this is one movie that’s won me over, and I will be there opening weekend for sure.

Dexter Fletcher (EDDIE THE EAGLE) directs with a script from Lee Hall (BILLY ELLIOT, WAR HORSE) and also stars Richard Madden (GAME OF THRONES), Jamie Bell (FANTASTIC FOUR) and Bryce Dallas Howard (JURASSIC WORLD).

Here’s the synopsis:

ROCKETMAN is an epic musical fantasy about the incredible human story of Elton John’s breakthrough years. The film follows the fantastical journey of transformation from shy piano prodigy Reginald Dwight into international superstar Elton John. This inspirational story – set to Elton John’s most beloved songs and performed by star Taron Egerton – tells the universally relatable story of how a small-town boy became one of the most iconic figures in pop culture. ROCKETMAN also stars Jamie Bell as Elton’s longtime lyricist and writing partner Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as Elton’s first manager, John Reid, and Bryce Dallas Howard as Elton’s mother Sheila Farebrother.

ROCKETMAN is in theaters May 31.
