Rodat writing Warcraft

Geeks unite! We must find Private Ryan in Azeroth! Okay so that never happened but Robert Rodat screenwriter of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN is writing the script for the WORLD OF WARCRAFT movie.

Director for WARCRAFT, Sam Raimi let it slip that Rodat was writing, “We want to be really faithful to the game. We would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a ‘World of WarCraft’ adventure. Only obviously it’s very different ’cause it’s expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture.”

I have not played WARCRAFT for nearly a year and a half, but my world is basically comprised of friends who are diehards that have 7 or 8 level 70 characters. They’ve been playing since the days of the real time strategy in 1994. To them a WARCRAFT movie was not conceivable until they read the books of course. The plot of the movie was based originally on the story of the Lich King, but that was recently changed. It is uncertain whether the film will be based on a central character from the books, or if they will create a new idea all together. Raimi said this on that very subject, “The Horde and the Alliance and the mythology that takes place in the game, and the archetypes that the game presents. I think we would try and find touchstones within the game to make it accurate and true and choose one or some of the lands that are portrayed in the game with as much accuracy and authenticity as possible.

Raimi does realize how important this world is to the WoW fans out there. As far as choosing Rodat to pen the screenplay, it’s not terrible. The guy did write PRIVATE RYAN and that was good. The question is, is he capable of writing a story that will please not only fans but non-fans? I’m just wondering on how they are going to narrow a plot decision down and what classes/races of characters they will choose.
