Alfonso Cuaron's Roma wins top prize at Critics' Choice Awards

Last night was another notable one for the awards race, with the critics voicing their picks for the best of the year at the Critics’ Choice Awards, put on by the Broadcast Film Critics Association. Meant to honor the best in both film and television, some big-ticket Oscar favorites walked away with more trophies and clout after also scoring at the Golden Globes last weekend, and perhaps before hearing more positive news when Oscar nominations are announced one week after tomorrow.

The big winner of the evening was ROMA, with the Netflix drama from Alfonso Cuaron taking home the prizes for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Language Film. Another big winner was BLACK PANTHER with three wins for Production Design, Costume Design and Visual Effects. Actor Christian Bale also got a big boost in the Best Actor race, winning for both Best Actor in a Comedy and Best Actor overall for his work as Dick Cheney in VICE. Though this is no indication of an Oscar win, he’s the actor with the most heat coming off him after this and his Golden Globe win.

The biggest surprises of the evening came in the form of not one, but two ties, the first being for Best Actress (film), with Lady Gaga (A STAR IS BORN) and Glenn Close (THE WIFE) taking home the award. The second was in the Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie, with Amy Adams (SHARP OBJECTS) and Patricia Arquette (ESCAPE AT DANNEMORA) winning the prizes.
