SAG nominees include A Star is Born, Black Panther, The Favourite & more

Award season continues with another major outlet announcing this year’s nominees for the best of the best. This time around it’s the actor’s turn to share their opinions (for once, right?), and through the Screen Actors Guild awards, they have announced their nominees for the best in film and television this year.

Making up the largest branch of the Academy, how the actors vote here should offer a clearer picture about how the acting nominations should look come the actual Oscar nominations next month. For the most part, things are looking about as pundits have been predicting since the season kicked off, with a few notable surprises. For example, John David Washington hadn’t been getting as much attention for BLACKKKLANSMAN a much as his co-star, Adam Driver, but both secured nominations in lead and supporting actor categories. As well, supporting actress is missing two heavy Oscar favorites, namely Regina King for IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK and Claire Foy for FIRST MAN, with Margot Robbie and Emily Blunt securing nominations for MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS and A QUIET PLACE in their slots.

Other surprising nominations are in the Best Ensemble section, which is like the Best Picture for SAG. While A STAR IS BORN, BLACK PANTHER and BLACKKKLANSMAN were expected, BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY and CRAZY RICH ASIANS are unexpected entries – especially with movies like VICE, THE FAVOURTIE, and GREEN BOOK, playing strongly in other categories, with movies like WIDOWS and IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK shut out completely.

With the exception of BRAVEHEART and THE SHAPE OF WATER, no movie has won Best Picture at the Oscars since the SAG award’s inception, so though it doesn’t mean the lack of a nomination means you won’t win BP (nor a SAG nomination guaranteed a BP nomination), things are indeed looking much better for those nominated knowing the acting branch is behind them.
