Sam Raimi will try to survive The Day of the Triffids

Sam Raimi hasn’t seen too much downtime since he left the SPIDER-MAN series behind. He’s working on a WORLD OF WARCRAFT movie, producing a ton of stuff, and heading to Oz with Robert Downey Jr.

Now he’s dipping into some classic sci-fi with THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS. The story involves a blinding meteor shower, sentient flesh-eating plants, and a group of survivors trying to deal with the aftermath.

John Wyndam’s 1951 post-apocalyptic novel was previously adapted (loosely) into a 1962 film and a pair of BBC TV serials. This new project made the Hollywood rounds in a recent studio bidding war before Raimi’s Mandate company grabbed it — the filmmaker loved the original as a boy and wants to direct the update.

Wyndam’s book “The Midwich Cuckoos” has also been adapted to film (twice) as the better-titled VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED.
