Samuel L. Jackson believes Nick Fury & S.H.I.E.L.D. will return to the MCU

With all the character unveiling and discoveries of massive worlds, it seems weird to think this whole MCU started with small conversations between Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), or Stark and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). They were these little moments that let the audience know something bigger was on the way. But after S.H.I.E.L.D. collapsed at the end of WINTER SOLDIER everyone was led to believe the organization was done (in the movie realm) and that The Avengers were on their own.

But even Jackson knows how important his character is, and during an interview with Coming Soon he was asked if there’s still a place S.H.I.E.L.D in the MCU, and Jackson let everyone know that the heroes can’t exist without him for too long:

“Yeah! For sure, definitely. Why wouldn’t there be? There’s some way of fixing what they created, and hopefully somebody has that going on or Nick Fury is out there — wherever he is, probably hanging out with Jules and walking the world — figuring out what happened and how it got to that particular place. Maybe they'll find out that all that was part of a ruse to get to something else also. That would be great. They'll bring me back somehow, some way, for some reason. I mean, they didn't have me around to referee the kids when they didn't go to their rooms and got in this big old fight. We'll see what happens.”

The folks at Marvel have let us know they intend to cycle out characters—giving some a break, bringing new ones in and then bringing old ones back. But who says they can’t do that with whole groups of people or organizations? When S.H.I.E.L.D. collapsed it created for an interesting dynamic as it put everything in the hands of The Avengers, and last May we saw how that went. But after what we can assume will happen in INFINITY WAR the world may decide it needs S.H.I.E.L.D., and the organization (with Fury) may return to advise a new band of heroes that never got that old-school Fury advice (Spider-Man, Black Panther, Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, etc.).

At the end of the day I just want Jackson back. He’s basically the Morgan Freeman of the MCU, simply because when there’s a problem or inter-character conflict he makes sense of it all just by opening his mouth. Without him their world has collapsed into chaos, as Jackson pointed out in the quote. Plus through the TV series, AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., we can see that the organization is still functioning in some capacity. All I know is that someone needs to be around to keep that Winter Solider (Sebastian Stan) in check. That guy has issues.

No matter what Jackson says, we here at Joblo know where Nick Fury is…our own Paul Shirey un-boxed him last week.
