Samurai Jack update

It’s been a quiet couple of years since we heard that animator Genndy Tartakovsky’s unique and insane ‘toon SAMURAI JACK was coming to theaters from indie studio Frederator Films.

The property is apparently still slicing its way forward, and according to a blog post at Frederator, it has JACK fan JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot company on board as co-producers, and is set up at Paramount.

Alas, the movie’s progress is reportedly “glacial”, and the script for the “2D/stereoscopic 3D production” is still being written by Tartakovsky himself.

The former Cartoon Network series followed a future-flung swordsman battling the armies of demon lord Aku (RIP Mako). The pop-culture packed samurai tale referenced everything from Kurosawa to ‘Lone Wolf and Cub’ to Frank Miller’s 300 to STAR WARS (which Tartakovsky already captured with his CLONE WARS series).
