Shailene Woodley just had one heck of a summer with DIVERGENT and THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, putting her in a comfortable spot where she can be more picky with projects coming her way. We just saw the first trailer for next year’s INSURGENT and now we’re hearing that she may be up for a the female lead role in the intriguing Edward Snowden movie from Oliver Stone. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is already set to play the controversial NSA leaker and Woodley would play his girlfriend in the movie which is based on two books: Luke Harding’s “The Snowden Files” and Anatoly Kucherena’s upcoming “Time of the Octopus”.

Perhaps taking a career path like fellow YA adaptation star Jennifer Lawrence, it would be wise for Woodley to take on some mature subject matter. With a possible return to form for director Oliver Stone, this would be a great choice for her to make that move. Details on Stone’s take on the stories are unknown right now; Time of the Octopus follows Snowden’s life after the leak, up to movie to Moscow where he sought asylum.

Since her breakout performance in THE DESCENDANTS and my personal favorite of hers in THE SPECTACULAR NOW Woodley has been gaining a much large spotlight for herself. It wouldn’t hurt to be part of something that is no doubt going to stir up heated debate; a more worthwhile debate I would think than the ongoing DIVERGENT is just a blatant rip-off of THE HUNGER GAMES.

THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT opens in theaters on March 20, 2015.
