Shazam! international trailer references other heroes of the DC universe

As a few new teasers and trailers for DC’s SHAZAM! have come out we’ve been seeing more and more funny bits and plays on the teenager-in-a-superhero's-body angle – and all of it looks terrific. If you were hoping to get a few more pieces of new footage before the movie’s release on April 5 then the new trailer for the folks in China has your back. Filled with loads of new glimpses at the movie, there’s new jokes, punches and some pitch-perfect references to the greater universe of DC movies. Yeah, even this hero thought talking to fish couldn’t be a good power…until Aquaman unleashed his army of fish.

Featuring an intro from stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Glazer, the new trailer shows more of Billy Batson discovering his powers after saying the magic word, all before having to use them to stop the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) from, I don’t know, breaking stuff. This leads to a hilarious encounter that tackles a trope used in all sorts of blockbusters, i.e. the speech-from-far-away bit. More interesting than that, though, are the references to past DC movies, like the kid humming the John Williams SUPERMAN theme while playing with his toys, and Glazer’s Freddy talking about how awesome fish-talking powers really are. Where was this kid when Aquaman was suffering from decades of mockery?

So far the first reactions have been terrific, so it looks like we all rest assured the movie is indeed as crazy fun as it looks.

Here’s the synopsis:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies tests Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

SHAZAM! is in theaters April 5.
