Shia LaBeouf will not be in Indiana Jones 5

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

When Shia LaBeouf’s Mutt Williams (a.k.a. Henry Jones III) grabbed Indy’s (Harrison Ford) hat off the ground in INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL., fans were praying it didn’t mean he would take on the mantle of the “new Indiana Jones.”  Well, Indy fans, your prayers have been answered by screenwriter David Koepp who recently confirmed we will not be seeing any vine-swinging greasers in the fifth INDIANA JONES film.

While talking with EW about the status of the fifth movie’s script, Koepp went straight to the point and addressed everyone’s concerns with a blunt confirmation that LaBeouf will not be involved in the latest entry in the JONES saga. Nor will refrigerators or aliens:

Harrison plays Indiana Jones, that I can certainly say. And the Shia LaBeouf character is not in the film.

CRYSTAL SKULL hit theaters back in 2008 after almost 20 years since the third installment, THE LAST CRUSADE, released. At the end of SKULL, Jones marries his RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK love interest – and Mutt’s mom – Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen). At one point Indy’s iconic hat fell off, leading Mutt to reach down and grab it and try to put it on, all before Indy snatches it back. Audiences took this as a hint that maybe the torch would be passed to this younger Jones, but bad fan reception to the movie and character probably put that plan in an ancient sarcophagus.

His exclusion from the movie is probably for the best, as LaBeouf has spoken out against the movie, saying he felt like they “dropped the ball” on the film’s legacy. Ford was not pleased with these comments, calling him “a f@cking idiot.” So, no, it’s not a good idea to put these two in another JONES movie again. However, things seem to be going smoothly for the new film, and Koepp said they are still working on the script, which they said they’re “mostly proud” of, and that if all goes well that the action flick will be Steven Spielberg’s “next film.”

There’s a lot I didn’t like about INDIANA JONES 4, but I don’t despise it like many people do. But, I’m on the side of the many who feel LaBeouf shouldn’t come back to the series. I never had a feeling they would bring him back, but at least it’s good to have it in writing.

INDIANA JONES 5 is set for July 2020.
