Showtime announces Penny Dreadful: City of Angels follow-up series

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Just when you thought the month of October gobbled up all of the spooktacular announcements for upcoming horror entertainment, November has come in swinging as Showtime has revealed that they've given the greenlight to a PENNY DREADFUL sequel series. Created, written, and executive produced by PENNY DREADFUL creator John Logan, PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS is set in a 1938 Los Angeles and is expected to begin production in 2019.

In recently speaking about the upcoming series, Logan said in a statement, “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will have a social consciousness and historical awareness that we chose not to explore in the Penny Dreadful London storylines,” Logan revealed. “We will now be grappling with specific historical and real world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same. There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of Penny Dreadful, there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice.”

Set to executive produce the series alongside Logan is Michael Aguilar (KIDDING), for a show that will introduce fans to new characters, locales, storylines, and horros set in the Penny Dreadful universe. Executive producers of the original series, Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris of Neal Street Productions will also join the effort, with Logan's Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions producing and James Bagley serving as co-executive producer.

“We were so thrilled when John Logan came to us with this wildly original take on the Penny Dreadful mythology that explores both the human spirit and the spirit world here in California,” said Gary Levine, President of Programming, Showtime Networks. “Penny Dreadful: City of Angelspromises to be an extraordinary saga of familial love set against the terrifying monsters that are around us and within us.”

For those of you who've yet to check out the original series, PENNY DREADFUL began in 2014 and lasted for a total of three seasons before ending with a shocking finale to the show's horrific events. The show features Explorer Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton), American gunslinger Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), scientist Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadway), and medium Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) uniting to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London. It's more or less the best version of THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN you'll ever see. Furthermore, I also think the show highlights one of Eva Green's best roles to date. For real, check her out in "Séance," the second episode of the first season. She is pure perfection.

We'll be sure to bring you more news related to PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS as it becomes available. In the meantime, all three seasons of the show are available to own and watch, right now.
