Sigourney Weaver talks up Neill Blomkamp's Alien popcorn film & Ghostbusters

Sigourney Weaver hasn't officially signed on for Neill Blomkamp's upcoming ALIEN film, but to think otherwise would be pretty ridiculous given the concept art we've seen thus far as well as her enthusiasm for the project. She'll forever be linked to the ALIEN saga and just recently she had a bit to say about the turn of events caused by ALIEN VS PREDATOR, and how that dissuaded a particularl filmmaker from delivering another ALIEN movie (at least, for a time). She also had some encouraging words to say about Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS film! Imagine that!

Regarding Sigourney Weaver's choice to have Ripley killed off in ALIEN 3:

Well, yes – because I heard that Fox was gonna do Alien vs Predator. Which really depressed me because I was very proud of the movies. I’ve nothing against building a movie on a video game but at the time, it was, as Jim Cameron said I think publicly, ‘why would you want to do that?'" It’s like making Alien meets the Wolfman.

How plans for AVP deterred a particular filmmaker:

In fact Ridley Scott was about to direct a third one, until this was announced, and he dropped out, because he also wanted to do an Alien sequel.

Regarding Neill Blomkamp's upcoming ALIEN film:

I’m so excited about Neill – because Neill is like you guys! He broke the tapes of these movies when he was a kid, he watched them so much. I love the fact that’s Neill’s fulfilling his childhood dream of what he hopes will be the popcorn movie, the Alien popcorn movie that he wanted as a kid to see.

It’s a wonderful script. The women are gonna do an awesome job. I know that Ivan Reitman is co-producing it. I hear rumours that Danny [Aykroyd] is also gonna do a script so I think whatever happens, we’re in for a treat. I can’t wait to see the ladies do their thing.

Despite the negativity surrounding GHOSTBUSTERS, everyone who's read the script seems pretty keen on the upcoming film, so I'm curious as to what's in-store for us. Feig's BUSTERS aside, I also wonder if Aykroyd will follow through with a whole other GHOSTBUSTERS film after that. Seems a bit overkill if you ask me, but I suppose everyone's aiming to please the fans. Or make money. A bit of both. Blomkamp's ALIEN, on the other hand, looks like it may just the best kind of fan service. Bring it!
