Sister Act 3: Whoopi Goldberg says she wants to get the gang back together

Can I get a hallelujah? Can I get an amen? Why am I getting all biblical, you ask? Well, according to Whoopi Goldberg, she's hoping that another sequel to her Sister Act film series sees the light.

Recently while giving an interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Goldberg told her host that she's hoping to reprise her role as Deloris Van Cartier, aka Sister Mary Clarence, for a Sister Act sequel. When asked about why a third film in the series was never made, Goldberg revealed that studios were reluctant to produce another sequel, saying that no one wanted to see it.

“For a long time, they kept saying no one wanted to see it. And then quite recently, it turns out, that that may not be true," Goldberg explained to Corden. "People may want to see it. So we’re working diligently to try to figure out how to get the gang together and come back."

Naturally, Corden was totally game for another Sister Act film. I mean, who wouldn't be? If enough of the original superfluity is down to get back in the habit, why not give it a go and let the power of Christ compel audience members once more?

“It’s a really fun movie and it feels good," Goldberg said. "And you know, nobody’s mad. It’s just, listen—bad singing, great singing, okay singing and then nuns. What’s better than that?”

The original Sister Act was released in 1992, and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit quickly followed in 1993. Both films featured Goldberg as a lounge singer named Deloris Van Cartier, who after witnessing a murder is brought to Saint Katherine's Convent in Saint Katherine's Parish as a part of an elaborate witness protection plan. While there, Deloris, as Sister Mary Clarence, soon becomes the church's new choir director, and hilarity ensues.

As for the sequel, Deloris had become a famous performer in Las Vegas after her time in hiding with the nuns of Saint Katherine's Parish. Desperate for her help in saving their school from closure, Sisters Mary Patrick, Mary Robert, and Mary Lazarus recruit Deloris to shake things up before all is lost.

SISTER ACT 2: BACK IN THE HABIT also featured a young Lauryn Hill as songstress Rita Wilson. You can watch her strut her stuff during the film's finale by watching the video posted above.

In my opinion, both films are classic comedies and I'd jump at the chance of seeing another film in the series. While it's possible that several of the original actors will be unable to return, I think this would be worth doing if a handful were up to the task. What do you all think?
