Speedy Gonzales getting his own non-racist movie

I don’t think I’ve seen a good live action/animated hybrid kids movie since SPACE JAM, but I’ll be damned if Hollywood isn’t going to keep crapping them out ever since ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS made an unholy amount of money. The latest cartoon to move to the real world will be Looney Toon Speedy Gonzales, the super fast mouse that conforms to absolutely no Mexican stereotypes.

George Lopez is voicing speedy and promises to give his “Latino seal of approval” the film, making sure it’s thoroughly non-offensive. I take it that means no sombrero? And are Mexicans fast? Is that even a stereotype?

Lopez and his wife Anna, are producing, and she explains their vision for a new Speedy:

“We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s — the racist Speedy,” Anne Lopez said with a chuckle. “Speedy’s going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he’s a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he’s good at.”

She said “boy” but I’ll assume it’s just a young mouse. I can’t see George Lopez voicing a super fast CGI Mexican child going very well.
