Spider-Man: Far From Home is swinging back to theaters with new action scene

spider-man, far from home, extended

Coming hot off the wild success of AVENGERS: ENDGAME, Sony and Marvel’s latest Spider-Man collaboration, FAR FROM HOME, easily became the highest-grossing Spidey entry and is now Sony’s biggest movie ever at $1.109 billion, passing SKYFALL’s $1.108 billion. But the movie webbing up more money than any ever has in the studio’s history is not good enough for Sony, and now they’re looking to make a few extra bucks by putting the 23rd MCU movie back into theaters for a limited time, and with a shiny, never-before-seen action sequence included to entice us fans.

Taking a cue from Disney and Marvel’s AVENGERS: ENDGAME expansion – which included some new goodies, came out around the time of FAR FROM HOME, and stayed only a weekend – FAR FROM HOME’s extension with the deleted scene will hit theaters for this Labor Day weekend only (via THR). No details have been given beyond that the scene will be a new action scene that wasn’t included in the official release and will extend the runtime by about four minutes.

Now, if we put our thinking caps on, we can start to think about what that action sequence will be. Right now, my only finger is pointed at the scene from the trailer that didn’t make it into the final movie, wherein Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) is fighting off some thugs in his Iron Spider gear, then to exchange in some pleasant banter with the cops (seen in the trailer below). The scene was cut entirely from the movie despite having a big presence in the promotion, so it would be a good bet to think that it will make its way into this extended version, even though we have technically seen it.

At the time, the purpose of ENDGAME’s expansion seemed a bit more on-the-nose given its proximity to both FFH’s release and to crossing AVATAR’s then-top-spot around the world. Now when it comes to FFH’s own placement into more theaters with new footage, it just seems like a simple cash grab before the end of the summer and all schools going back into session. It already is both the top Spidey movie and the top Sony movie, so this just seems like a victory lap – and could be the start of a trend where MCU movies go back into more theaters just as they’re about to leave.

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME is expanding to more theaters starting August 29, and going into Labor Weekend.
