Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It is getting a Netflix TV series update

Wow, has it really been 30 years since the release of Spike Lee's SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT? I remember this film being a big point of interest for my sister and her friends, back in the day. Now, it's been announced that Lee will be taking Miss Nola Darling's story to the Netflix small screen, by way of a timely and topical update to the original.

Set to debut on Thanksgiving, November 23, 2017, the seriously sexy comedy will star breakout actress DeWanda Wise as Nola Darling, an uncompromising woman in her late twenties struggling to define herself and divide her time among her friends, her job and her three lovers: The Cultured Model, Greer Childs, The Protective Investment Banker, Jamie Overstreet and Da Original B-Boy Sneakerhead, Mars Blackmon. Nola is not who you want her to be. Nola is now—she is outspoken, complicated, progressive, unapologetic, passionate, sexual.

Set to appear in the series is DeWanda Wise (SHOTS FIRED) as Nola Darling. Nola’s friends will consist of Clorinda Bradford played by Margot Bingham (BARBERSHOP 3), Shemekka Epps played by Chyna Layne (PRECIOUS), and Rachel played by Elise Hudson. The gallery below also features a look at Nola’s three lovers: Greer Childs played by Cleo Anthony (DIVERGENT),  Jamie Overstreet played by Lyriq Bent (THE BOOK OF NEGROES), and Mars Blackmon played by HAMILTON alum Anthony Ramos.

As the creator of SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT, Spike Lee will direct all 10 episodes of the upcoming series, in addition to handling production duties as well. Way back when, Lee shot the original film in just 12 days during a long, hot, and exhausting 1986 Summer. For the time, SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT was an impactful film that many say changed the way African Americans are portrayed in the movies. The forthcoming update will be Lee's first foray into television.

Spike Lee's SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT TV series will debut on Netflix this Thanksgiving, Novemeber 23, 2017.

Extra Tidbit: All I can recall from SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT is that the film had a truly bumpin' soundtrack. Here's hoping that the music in the series lives up to its predecessor.
