Starz's American Gods blesses fans with a Season 2 release date

Hallelujah! AMERICAN GODS actor Ricky Whittle has traveled down from the mountains on high to declare that Starz's high fantasy drama will return for Season 2 beginning on March 10, 2019. According to Whittle's enthusiastic Instagram post, the show will be made available via Starz and on Amazon Prime Video throughout 200 territories worldwide.

Here's the official plot synopsis for Seasond 2 of AMERICAN GODS:

We were forged in God’s image, but the Gods are also made in ours — and in Season Two the battle moves inexorably toward crisis point as the destinies of gods and men collide. While Mr. World plots revenge for the attack against him in Season One, Shadow throws in his lot with Wednesday’s attempt to convince the Old Gods of the case for full-out war, with Laura and Mad Sweeney in tow. A council at the House on the Rock explodes into chaos, sending deities both Old and New on quests across America that will converge on Cairo, Illinois: forcing Shadow to carve out a place as a believer in this strange new world of living gods — a dark world where change demands commitment, and faith requires terrible sacrifice.

As part of the lead-up to the show's Season 2 premiere, Starz will host a "Holy Day Binge" of the eight episodes that launched the bizarre and intense series. The entertainment feast for your soul is scheduled to begin on Saturday, December 29th, when the bell tolls noon.

Despite being plagued with a series of production troubles, the second season of AMERICAN GODS promises to deliver a follow-up to the show's inaugural season that will have fans falling to their knees, blinded by the many twists and turns that lay ahead. As it happens, executive producers/co-showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green exited the series over creative differences with Freemantle, which set the program's schedule back a ways. Following their departure, HANNIBAL's Jesse Alexander stepped up, only to wave goodbye to the endeavor after being met with complaints about the Season 2 script. In addition to the program's production hiccups, both Gillian Anderson (who played Media) and Kristin Chenoweth (who played Easter) left the show during all the confusion. Anderson has since been replaced by Kahyun Kim (PLAYING IT COOL, SPA NIGHT).

For my money, AMERICAN GODS was one of the best television series of 2017, as the show more than delivered on presenting fans with a quality adaptation of bestselling author Neil Gaiman's classic fantasy novel. Was it page perfect? Of course not, but damn was that first season psychedelic, sexy, and sinfully good beyond measure. I'm more than ready to jump back into the journey of Shadow (Ricky Whittle), an ex-convict who meets a mysterious man named "Wednesday" (Ian McShane), and who knows more than he first seems to about Shadow's life and past. Praise be and bring it on!
