Steven Spielberg to produce Blackhawk for DC with an eye to direct

Well, check this out. Steven Spielberg is set to join the DC Universe as Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman Toby Emmerich made the announcement that Spielberg will be producing BLACKHAWK, and, more tantalizingly, he apparently has his eye on directing the project as well. Exciting!

First appearing in Military Comics #1 back in 1941, the series followed a small team of World War II-era ace pilots know as the Blackhawks who operated out of a hidden base to strike back against the Axis powers. The team, led by the mysterious Blackhawk, also faced foes such as King Condor and Killer Shark. Toss in groups of gorgeous and deadly femme fatales and fantastic war machines, and you've got the makings for a exciting adventure. Blackhawk was quite popular during its time, and even outsold every other comic book out there with the exception of Superman. The screenplay for BLACKHAWK is currently being penned by David Koepp, who has worked with Steven Spielberg on JURASSIC PARK, THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK, WAR OF THE WORLDS, and INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL. In a statement, Spielberg said:

It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring Ready Player One to the screen. They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre.  I am excited to reunite with them on Blackhawk.

Warner Bros.' Toby Emmerich added, "We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure. We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing Blackhawk to movie audiences worldwide." Spielberg always has a number of projects in the air, so it's not yet known whether he will indeed take on directing duties on BLACKHAWK, but it certainly does seem to be in his wheelhouse. BLACKHAWK definitely won't be Spielberg's next project, as he's aiming to shot INDIANA JONES 5 next year which is already slated for a July 10, 2020 relase.
